Repurposing Water Treatment Residuals for Sustainable Lake Restoration (RE-FRESH)

The RE-FRESH project aims to repurpose drinking water treatment residuals (DWTR) through a circular economy approach to reduce harmful nutrient compounds, primarily phosphorus, in four Baltic lakes and ponds (two in Latvia and two in Estonia). By transforming waste materials into valuable restoration resources, RE-FRESH contributes to sustainable water management in the Baltic region.

The project will deliver a tested and practical solution for end users, including a DWTR dosage calculation tool for water bodies, five stakeholder workshops, and knowledge-sharing activities to ensure adaptability and long-term sustainability both regionally and beyond.

As the lead partner, the Estonian University of Life Sciences (EMU) is responsible for overall project management and coordination. EMU oversees the implementation of project tasks, maintains communication with project partners, advisory bodies and the Managing Authority, and coordinates partner meetings and stakeholder engagement activities.

The EMU Chair of Hydrobiology and Fisheries conducts sampling and analysis in Lake Põrmujärv and Lake Mäeküla, monitoring the ecological status of the test areas before, during and after the implementation of the project methodology. Project results will be disseminated through scientific conferences, social media and targeted public outreach events.
