Chair of Environmental Protection and Landscape Management

The Chair of Environmental Protection and Landscape Management is an internationally recognized center of expertise in Estonia, focusing on education and research in the environmental field. We create and share knowledge and practical skills for the sustainable use and protection of the environment and landscapes. Our mission is to train highly qualified specialists for the environmental sector, conduct scientific research, and develop practical guidelines to advance the field. We are open to collaboration with other disciplines, universities, and research institutions both nationally and internationally.

The Chair combines theoretical and practical knowledge, offering study programs at three levels:

  • Environmental Protection (full-time, bachelor's program)
  • Environmental Management and Policy (part-time, master’s program)
  • Environmental Governance and Adaptation to Climate Change (full-time, English-taught master’s program)

Research

The main research areas of the Chair of Environmental Protection and Landscape Management include environmental policy, public engagement, and the assessment of the effectiveness of environmental activities. Other key focus areas are ecosystem services, ecology, land use and its changes, cultural landscapes, rural settlement, and regional development. Many research projects are linked to remote sensing technologies.

In the bio- and environmental chemistry laboratory, research is conducted on circular bioeconomy topics and nature-based solutions. The research activities cover both theoretical studies and applied development projects, with a strong emphasis on supervising doctoral students. The Chair is actively involved in multiple international collaboration projects.
