The Soil of the Year is traditionally announced on World Soil Day, observed annually on December 5th. In Estonia, the designation is made by the Estonian Soil Science Society with the objective of enhancing public awareness of the diversity and distinct characteristics of soils. Soil forms the basis of terrestrial life and plays a critical role in supporting sustainable development. Estonia has been selecting a Soil of the Year since 2014.
