Socially engaging life science research: what, who and how?
Supervisor: Anton Shkaruba (Estonian University of Life Sciences)

Life science (including environmental) research is often disconnected from stakeholder communities it is supposed to benefit, and that occurs on many levels. That often creates disappointment in end-user and broader stakeholder groups, which are concerned about the relevance of research products and the cost of fundamental science born by the society. This also backfires research communities and their individual members, especially early career ones. A HORIZON Europe BETTER LIFE project run at the chair is just starting, and it seeks to understand, what socially engaging life science exactly means in Estonia and the broader surrounding region, and what tools can be created to measure and insure socially engaging scientific production.

The MSc student would directly contribute to the activities of BETTER LIFE project in Estonia, or (if coming and having interests from/laying outside of Estonia) to explore other locations. The research part would include sociological part (interviews, polls, workshops), desktop internet search, policy analysis and literature review. The student will be encouraged to take part in BETTER LIIFE training and/or networking activities.
