Short historical overview
The Department of Horticulture and Apiculture was first established in 1919 at the Tartu University Faculty of Agriculture. First students of horticulture began their studies in 1948, when the curriculum of horticulture was created.
The Estonian Academy of Agriculture was established in 1951 and since then horticultural education and research has been carried out here under the different structural units. Since 2005 the Department of Horticulture is a part of the Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the Estonian University of Life Sciences.

Area of activity

  • physiology and biochemistry of horticultural plants,
  • cultivation technologies of fruits, vegetables and ornamentals,
  • postharvest quality and storage technologies of horticultural products,
  • garden design
