PK.1593 Urban landscape analysis

The course Urban landscape analysis is created in order to prepare a solid analysis fundament before designing in an urban environment. The course is designed as pre-phase of the bachelor design project, the methodology, used in the course is easily carried out on any design subject or a project area.

The aim of the course is to enhance the understanding the urban space structure, character and features as well as to establish personal students relation to it. Both is necessary for the next phase – design of the urban open space.

The analysis methods of the course are chosen in order to link students personal experience and gathering of objective knowledge of a project site and its surrounding. The course comprises lectures, project site visits, creation of a cognitive map of the urban area, working with map materials in layers, hand-drawn sketches of different urban typologies, elements of Lynch analysis, as well as other thematic analysis of particular urban area chosen by the student individually. Course outcome is a complex, multi-layered analysis map supplemented by the hand-drawings and descriptions, which examies different typologies, layers, elements and features of an urban landscape.
