Ulm University (Germany), Faculty of Natural Science, Institute of Systematic Botany and Ecology

Main research areas of the institute include ecophysiology of plants and ecosystem dynamics as well as technical applications of ecological processes. The group by Prof. Marian Kazda focusses on wetlands and plant-soil interactions. In detail, we are investigating turnover of oxygen in the root system of wetland plants and application of optochemical sensors in ecological questions. Another major applied topic is the production of biogas from agricultural residues, also including on-demand biogas production using easily degradable carbohydrates. The latter studies are performed in cooperation with the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology of Ulm University.

Another working group of the institute under Prof. Steven Jansen focuses on the functional properties of vascular tissues of wooden plants and their relationship to drought resistance and hydraulics.

Both groups promote a high degree of internationalization, with co-operation and activities in different countries as demonstrated in the current IntASEK project. We also welcome motivated students and researchers from all over the world to become a part of our diverse working groups. You can contact us to the above topics in order to get more comprehensive information on the ongoing research activities and possibilities for your thesis.

» Marian Kazda is a professor of Plant Ecology at the Institute of Systematic Botany and Ecology, Ulm University (Germany). His main fields are plant ecology and wetland. Applied topics focus on sustainability, especially on regenerative energy and on demand biogas production. The research work combines ecological principles with a sophisticated apparative and analytical approach. His current scientific topics are wetland ecology and greenhouse gas emissions from wetlands, methane production and substrate oxygenation by plants and biogas production from different materials in connection to microbial ecology.

Keywords: Ecology and sustainable development, plant ecology, plant production, regenerative energy, networking with related companies and institutions.
