Laboratory of the sensory physiology of insects

Electrophysiological equipment and instruments enable to study the responses of insects to various external stimuli related to their food and habitat, using the method of impulse activity registration, on the level of single sensillae and sensory cells (taste, chemo-, olfactory, mechano-, thermo- and hygroreceptors). The combined method of gas chromatography and electrophysiology (antennography, sensillography) enables to study the role of smells in the search behaviour of insects and to find out the biologically active components in different mixtures of natural smells (kairomones, pheromones). The third experimental research conducted in the laboratory is the identification of the effect of external stimuli on the level of the behaviour of insects. A complex olfactometer is employed for testing the smells and special arenas for conducting selective experiments.
