Entomological collection

Entomological collection – EAA(Z)

The entomological collection of of Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences – EAA(Z) contains about 34 300 specimens of beetles, moths, sawflies a. o. insects. More valuable and significant part of this material is Karl Zolk’s (Kaarel Leius) coleopterological collection which contains about 12 600 samples, mainly gathered in the first half of 20th century from Estonia. The biggest part of this material is from  genera Ipidae, Chrysomelidae and Curculionidae.

The collection consists of three main parts: material gathered from Estonia from the end of 19th century until the middle of the 20th and the second part, material gathered later. The third part contains materials from tropical regions (A. Böttcher’s collection, from 19/20th century).

Material from the earlier periods is from the collections of  B. Gebauer, F. Sintenis & Max von zur Mühlen. The second part, later collection, is mainly compiled by H. Haberman, H. Õunap, M. Heidemaa a.o. The material of Coleoptera has served as a basis for faunistic monographs (H. Haberman, S. Rubel). Also these materials have been used nowadays for compiling the distribution maps of Coleoptera in Estonia (G. Miländer, K. Voolma, H. Õunap & I. Süda) and several entomological papers.

The  material of Hymenoptera, specially Tenthredinidae, has been the basis of dissertation in 2004 of M. Heidemaa about systematic studies on sawflies.

The entomological collection of Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences has been improved by adding entomological collection E. Merivee in 2004 and G. M. Dlussky in 2006, which are mainly  compiled of materials of Estonia and previous Soviet Union. These Estonian materials have been used for compiling the faunistic monographs and distribution maps also.

The collection is permanently enriched by new material from Estonia, trapping in the framework of agricultural and forestry research projects.

The materials of the collection are valuable for researching works of formation and development of estonian entomological fauna and also comprises unique material (the first samples are from 1874).
